Polaris 38 is scheduled for July 11th, 2026 and the promotion has put together an excited card packed with top talent, ending with an exciting welterweight grand prix. There are plenty of excellent competitors like Ashley Bendle, Mark Hibbard, Chris Leyendeckers, and Emily Leva all featured on the preliminary card long before the main attraction begins. That’s when 8 of the best welterweights in the world will battle it out to be crowned the newest Polaris champion. In between the final rounds of that tournament there will also be another title on the line, as Sarah Galvao meets Zara Di Tofano with the vacant bantamweight belt up for grabs.
Polaris 38: Welterweight Grand Prix Full Card Preview
Favorites
PJ Barch
PJ Barch is clearly going to be the man to beat here, mainly because he’s done it all before. He put on a flawless display to win an equally tough bracket the last time Polaris did a welterweight tournament back at Polaris 27 and although none of the competitors were the same, he still beat 3 of the best in the world to win that title. There might be a little more pressure on him now as the returning champion but he’s one of the most well-rounded grapplers in the world. With elite wrestling and some of the best counter-leglocks in the world, there are very few ways to beat Barch.
Mateusz Szczecinski
Mateusz Szczecinski just happens to have one of those ways in his locker though, and he’s already proven that just last year. He hit a crazy shotgun armbar that took Barch out in his second match at Polaris 31: North America vs Europe, although that was actually revenge for a loss to Barch from the year before. Barch outworked Szczecinski and played a perfect tactical game to beat him on points at ADCC 2024, before going on to win a bronze medal. Szczecinski has elite leglocks and a devastating shotgun armbar that allow him to submit anyone in the world, and he’s on the opposite side of the bracket to Barch so their trilogy match is the most likely final.
Contenders
Tommy Langaker
Tommy Langaker is one of the best European grapplers both in and out of the gi, and he’s always tough to submit. He’s faced the two favorites several times already and although he’s 0-3 against them, he’s always been in with a chance of winning. This time will be no different and although he’s on Barch’s side of the bracket, he won’t meet him until the semi-final. His first match will be a difficult one but Langaker has a wealth of experience to call on that gives him the advantage. He’s pretty well-rounded but his main strength is finding and finishing from the back, something he will likely get to show off at least once here.
Taylor Pearman
Taylor Pearman has made a name for himself as one of the best leglockers in the world over the last few years, and he’s a master of the false reap. He has a mountain climb right from the start though, as he’s been pitted against Barch in the very first round. If he can stay diligent and nullify Barch’s ability to counter him then he could win, even if only by decision if he can keep up a relentless pace of attacks from the bottom. If Pearman does manage to do that then it’s not hard to imagine him riding that wave of momentum all the way into the final at least.
Deandre Corbe
Deandre Corbe is another well-rounded competitor and he’s been flying the flag for ecological training methods at the highest level of the sport for a while now. He’s a fresh opponent for both of the favorites and he always comes with excellent gameplans, so he could present some problems for them. That will come in handy too, because he will be facing Szczecinski in his first match. He would actually be the favorite against either of the men he might face in the second round too, so as long as he can stick to the plan perfectly against Szczecinski; he could go all the way.
Dark Horses
Michael Liera Jr
Michael Liera Jr has been around the highest level of competition for well over a decade now and he’s shared the mats with virtually all of the top competitors of his generation. He’s never faced either Barch or Szczecinski though, and he’s 1-1 against Langaker. It’ll be a while before he faces any of them though, as his first match is against another dark horse instead. He has the clear advantage in experience over his first opponent and should be the slight favorite on paper, but after that point is when his run will most likely end.
Carson Coles
Carson Coles is the man matched with Liera Jr in the first round and although he might be the underdog there, it really is only by a small margin. Liera Jr has done it all before but Coles is young, hungry, and extremely talented. He’s been making waves on the UK circuit for the last year or so and seems to be right on the verge of breaking out at an international level, so this opening round match with Liera Jr is a huge opportunity for him. Similarly to Liera Jr, things only get tougher after that point and Coles would have to put on the best performance of his career to date in order to come away with the title.
Sebastian Patyk
Sebastian Patyk is actually the only man on the Polaris 38 card who wasn’t given his invite; he has to earn his place here instead. He won the Polaris Contenders tournament and had to beat some serious talent to do so, but he’s been given a seriously tough draw by facing Langaker in the opening round. He might not be as established as most of the other competitors here but he’s not totally fresh-faced; he actually made it to the semi-finals of the Ocean BJJ Pro Championship 2025 and beat an ADCC veteran along the way. There are no easy matches for Patyk here though and he’d need upsets in every match to win the belt, but it’s not completely out of the question.
Sarah Galvao vs Zara Di Tofano – Bantamweight Title
This will be just the second time that Sarah Galvao has competed for Polaris but she’s already earned her title-shot thanks to an incredible last few years. She won her debut in impressive fashion back at Polaris 36 and she is definitely the favorite to win again here. Zara Di Tofano is no easy match of course, and the Irish black belt is easily one of the top female competitors in Europe. She will be a game opponent but Galvao is usually only ever beaten by the thinnest of margins. Galvao will likely get the submission win here and leave without the title around her waist.
