Melvin Manhoef praises Maurice, winner of the MAX Netherlands qualifiers: "He's going to be a legend!" Bonjasky also said he was "excited" = 4.19 'K-1 WORLD MAX 2026 in Utrecht'
On April 19th (Sunday, local time), at the "K-1 WORLD MAX 2026 in Utrecht" held in Utrecht, Netherlands, the [K-1 WORLD MAX 2026 -70kg World's Strongest Tournament - Netherlands Qualifier] took place, and JJ Maurice from the Netherlands emerged victorious.
WFL producer Melvin Manhoef, who organized the tournament in cooperation with K-1, declared, "Maurice will become a legend too!" After winning, Maurice announced, "It's not a matter of 'it would be nice if I could become one.' I will join the ranks of the legends."
K-1 legend Remy Bonjasky, who also watched the tournament, was excited about the emergence of a new star.
Maurice, the winner, has earned the right to participate in the FINAL16 of "K-1 WORLD MAX 2026," which will be held on September 12th (Saturday) at the National Stadium No. 2 in Tokyo, where he will aim to become the world champion.
Below are comments from producer Manhoef and winners Maurice and Bonjasky.
■ Manhoef & Maurice
—That was a fantastic performance. Maurice, the winner, is now heading to Japan. Mr. Manhoef, the producer who organized the tournament, what are your thoughts on the match?
Manhoef: "I think Maurice is a very promising fighter representing the Netherlands, and I'm really proud of him. He's a very talented fighter who can do anything, and he has the mental fortitude of a warrior who won't give up in any situation. So I have high expectations for him. I'm sure he'll surprise many Japanese fans in the Final 16."
-- It's amazing that Maurice fought three matches and has not a single scratch on his face.
Manhoef: "That's right. He's very talented. I've felt his potential ever since he started playing in the WFL. Playing in Japan is a great opportunity for him, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do."
-- Do you have any advice for Maurice, who will be competing in Japan?
Manhoef: "Before going to Tokyo, the most important thing is to train hard. That's the most important thing. To go into Japan's 'big league' and win, tough training is essential. K-1 was once the largest organization in the world of stand-up martial arts. Ernesto Hoost, Badr Hari, Alistair Overeem...the list goes on and on. K-1 MAX has had Andy Souwer and Albert Kraus from the Netherlands...and Maurice might be the next one. We'll find out in December. We'll support him wholeheartedly. We want to see what he does for the Netherlands."
-- Maurice! Producer Manhoef has mentioned the names of K-1 legends and has high expectations for you. How do you feel about that?
Maurice: "It's great. I feel absolutely fantastic. I've trained hard my whole life. Intensely hard training. My father supported and trained me for 19 years. And now I'm here. I'm going to do it. It's not a 'it would be nice if I could' moment. I'm going to join the ranks of those legends."
--Mr. Morris's father is Jerry Morris, who once defeated the legend Ramon Dekker. You fought in the tournament three times, but which match stands out in your memory?
Maurice: "The match against Mitchell in the final is definitely the one I remember most. I expected the match against him to be a fierce 'war.' When we faced each other in the ring, I could tell by looking into his eyes that he was trying to take me down. He had the look in his eyes that he was serious about knocking me out. So I knew I had to finish him off quickly. If I didn't end it quickly, it would be a very long night for me. But I did it."
Manhoef: "There's a little-known story behind this, but Mitchell and Maurice actually trained together at the same gym for four years. That's why this fight was so emotionally charged. They knew each other well and pushed each other to improve. There was respect, but only one of them can go to Japan. One will get the ticket to Japan, and the other will go home. Maurice won today, but we don't know what will happen next. But for now, Maurice has won."
—It was the most intense battle for tickets to Tokyo.
Manhoef: "It was a very successful night. The fights were great, the crowd was hyped, and the atmosphere in the arena was fantastic. I feel that we have built a very good working relationship with K-1. In the future, we are planning to do something with WFL and K-1 in Portugal, Munich, and England. It's going to be busy from now on. I will keep you updated as we go along, but we will take it one step at a time. That is our plan for the future. It will be an amazing journey for us."
--I'm looking forward to it. So, what are your aspirations for Japan?
Maurice: "I'm going to take them all down!"
Manhoef: "Hey, say that in Japanese!"
Maurice: "People of Japan, I will become the champion!"
Manhoef: "Great!"
■ Remy Bonjasky
--The Dutch qualifiers were an incredible event. What are your thoughts on them?
Bonjasky: "It was fantastic. I was particularly impressed and excited by Maurice's KO in the tournament final."
—What were your overall impressions of the tournament?
Bonjasky: "The one who particularly impressed me was Mitchell Lamas. He had a very tough fight from the quarterfinals onwards. Perhaps the damage from the calf kicks prevented him from winning the final. After taking the calf kicks, he was hit with a knee to the face and lost by knockout. Maurice's performance in that fight was fantastic. Maurice did a great job winning every match and ending it all by knockout. It was perfect, including the entire tournament and the final finish."
—What are your impressions of the winner, Maurice?
Bonjasky: "He's the son of Jerry Morris. Jerry Morris was a great fighter and a champion. He even beat the legend Ramon Dekker. He seems to have inherited his father's strength. I think that's because he's been training since he was little."
And then he won his first tournament. The reason for that lies with his father. He declared, "My dad has won every tournament, so now it's my turn to win every tournament." He's still young, and I'm excited to see this promising young fighter grow.
—This time, we watched the K-1 qualifying tournaments in the Netherlands and Romania. What were your impressions as a legend?
Bonjasky: "In cooperation with K-1, the WFL in the Netherlands and the DFS in Romania have each held successful tournaments. I think that in the future, they will probably grow to be on the same scale as GLORY. To achieve that, it is important to discover talented young fighters. You can't grow a big tree without planting the seeds. If we hold tournaments like this and nurture young stars, they will become the next generation of stars in four or five years."
--What are your thoughts on a collaboration between K-1 and WFL?
Bonjasky: "This collaboration is very meaningful. I hope that opportunities like this will continue and that more talented fighters will be nurtured. I believe that if all the great organizations cooperate, it will become bigger and stronger than ever before. I look forward to the next time."
